Graffiti is traditionally part of football culture. It’s the perfect way to express yourself, your passion or dissatisfaction and even to intimidate opponents. The word graffiti originates from the Italian ‘graffiato’ but it has also certainly gained a foothold in Indonesian football culture. We have selected the best football-related graffiti throughout Indonesia for you to see. Here is our top 10 graffiti from Indonesian football clubs.
1. PSIM Yogyakarta – ‘Come on you Mataram’
The first piece on our list is from PSIM Yogyakarta. This visually appealing work of art has ‘pride 1929’ written, referring to the year PSIM was found. On the right, it says ‘come on you mataram’. Mataram is the pride of PSIM. Read all about the famous Mataram Derby here.
2. Persita Tangeran – ‘P$$I Pig$’
This piece created by Persita Tangerang supporters is stunning. Indonesian football and corruption go hand in hand. Various scandals have caused an uproar among the crowds and they are not afraid to voice their opinion in any possible way.
This time it’s Persita Tangerang that takes a shot at the PSSI officials. Painted as a bunch of money-hungry pigs with their logo turned upside down, the message is pretty self-explaining. We think the message was loud and clear for the Indonesian federation.
3. Cilegon United – ‘Pride of Banten’
Existing for over two decades already, the Volcano supporters from Cilegon United can be labeled as fanatic supporters. This piece was created back in 2015 and definitely reflects the dedication these supporters have for their club! Check out this cool time-lapse for this incredible mural.
4. Persib Bandung – “Hey ho, Let’s go’
Hey Ho, Let’s Go! The famous line from Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones. This time Persib Bandung’s Bobototh beautifully incorporated the text in their mural. It displays their Iconic Viking and obviously calls upon their comrade’s match spirit!
5. Persikota Tangerang – ‘Curva Nord 1994’
Just like the second one on our list, this piece is also located in Tangerang, but pays tribute to that other team from the city, Persikota! This one is made by the exceptional talented @ekso1_graffiti. If you take a look at his Instagram page he also made some really impressive pieces for Persita Tangerang. You can check out a small ‘making of video’ right here.
6. Persiba Bantul – ‘True Love’
Next up, we will make our way to Bantul in the Yogyakarta region. We instantly get warm and colorful vibes from these beautiful pieces by the talented 55781territory group. Check out their Instagram for more love for their region and club!
7. Deltras Sidoarjo – ‘The Lobsters’
In 2019 we were able to travel to Sidoarjo to see the stadium of Deltras F.C. Outside their stadium we saw these cool murals. The colors are so bright and the lining is razor sharp. It’s always nice to see graffiti directly around the stadium to get you even more excited for the game!
8. PSS Sleman – ‘Bring Back Our Glory’
Next up is Super Elja from Yogyakarta. This beautiful piece features the iconic hawk from PSS Sleman holding a banner saying ‘Bring Back Our Glory’. Checkout the making of here.
9. Madura United – ‘Greg Nwokolo’
Number 9 is this beautiful piece made in honor of Nigerian-born Madura United player Greg Nwokolo. The colors in these works of art are pretty amazing. This was actually part of a collection of multiple pieces made for the Madura United selection and is displayed close to their Bangkalan stadium.
10. Persis Solo – ‘Persis Per Sempre’
For the last piece, we make our way to Surakarta. The supporters of Persis Solo created this beautiful peace and proving their eternal love for Persis Solo by tagging ‘Persis Per Sempre’, which translates to ‘Persis Forever’. We think this is a very clean piece to end our top 10 graffiti list.
And that bring us to the end of our Top 10 graffiti tags in Indonesian Football. Do you think we left out a real masterwork? Please let us know in the comment section below!
