18-year-old Elkan Baggott is the latest hype among Indonesian football fans. The young Elkan Baggott currently represents English League One team Ipswich Town. A strange sighting on the English fields, as not many Indonesian players manage to make it to European Leagues. He joined “The Tracktor Boys” at the age of 14. And completed the youth academy until he made his debut for the first team.
The left-footed center back made his debut for Ipswich Town last October, in the EFL Trophy clash against Gillingham. Starting in the center of defense alongside Luke Woolfenden, he managed to keep a clean sheet. Leading the team to a comfortable 2-0 victory.
Baggott was born in Bangkok to an English father and an Indonesian mother. This provides him with the necessary bloodline to represent Indonesia’s national team. Sending Indonesian football fans into a frenzy. They are eagerly following the overseas performances of the young player. As can be seen from his social media accounts. His Instagram account currently counts 127k followers. That’s more than Ipswich Town and all its players combined!
Only days after his Ipswich debut, he set foot on Indonesian turf to represent Indonesia’s U-19 squad. Although Baggott lived in Jakarta for 3 years, he doesn’t speak Bahasa Indonesia. You might think that could lead to communication problems, but he looked comfortable in the center of defense. Leading the team to a solid 4-1 victory over Macedonia U-19.
He stands out due to his ability to stay calm in possession, his passing accuracy, and his dueling strength. He took lessons from his idols Virgil van Dijk, Rio Ferdinand, and Nemanja Vidic, to create his style of defending. Besides the aforementioned skills, there’s something else. His 1.94cm height makes him literally stand out in the U-19 squad. As the average length of the players is about 1.70cm.
Many football fans in the nation have high hopes that Baggott can provide the Garuda with that something extra in the race towards the U-20’s World Cup in 2021. It’s the first time in history that an official FIFA tournament will be hosted in the archipelago. The tournament is scheduled to take place between 20 May and 12 June 2021(Provided that Covid-19 doesn’t ruin this unique opportunity for Indonesia). It’s a massive opportunity to prove themselves on an International stage.
